What is “Domotica”?

Domotica [do·mò·ti·ca] is an Italian word meaning Home Automation.

Home automation or domotics is building automation for a home, called a smart home. A home automation system will monitor and/or control home attributes such as lighting, climate, entertainment systems, and appliances. It may also include home security such as access control and alarm systems. When connected with the Internet, home devices are an important constituent of the Internet of Things ("IoT").

What is the “Internet of Things”?

The Internet of things (IoT) describes the network of physical objects—“things”—that are embedded with sensors, software, and other technologies for the purpose of connecting and exchanging data with other devices and systems over the Internet.

The definition of the Internet of Things has evolved due to the convergence of multiple technologies, real-time analytics, machine learning, commodity sensors, and embedded systems. Traditional fields of embedded systems, wireless sensor networks, control systems, automation (including home and building automation), and others all contribute to enabling the Internet of things. In the consumer market, IoT technology is most synonymous with products pertaining to the concept of the "smart home", including devices and appliances (such as lighting fixtures, thermostats, home security systems and cameras, and other home appliances) that support one or more common ecosystems, and can be controlled via devices associated with that ecosystem, such as smartphones and smart speakers.

What is a Smart Home?

A Smart Home is a residence that has a network system designed and installed to assist with everyday tasks. The design takes into consideration the residents’ needs and desires for an easier life. By piecing together individual devices, such as, lightbulbs, outlets, thermostats and internet network systems and setting them up for automation or voice control, individuals and families can have seamless control of their home and the myriad of technologies that we use to enhance our life. These systems can make a home easier to live, work and play in, enhance safety and even cut energy costs.

Home Automation is created when a Smart Home system is designed and installed to automatically perform specific functions that have been programmed into each device.
